Mosaics in the City...

So I saw this mosaic mural on the local evening news and had to go find it. It was really beautiful on t.v but even more beautiful in person. If you're in Houston, head on over to Montrose and California to check it out....while you're in the area head on over to Niko Nikos for some fabulous Greek food!!!!
To find out more about MOCAH you can head on over to http://www.mocah.org/ to read about the wonderful projects this org has installed in our wonderful City of Houston. Hopefully in the coming months/years Houston and all of it's communities will have a magical makeover in mosaics for the city to enjoy for years and years to come. Mosaics is such a beautiful art form to decorate one's home, yard and life in and I hope people take notice. I'm feeling inspired now. Must create :)
More mosaics in the city to follow....Take care!

Garden Pots...

I love working with geometric shapes....easy to cut, easy on the eye and just full of color. Making functional mosaics is very fulfilling to me. Having beautiful art to dress up the inside and outside of the house is something I'll always enjoy doing so you'll see much more to come. I'm hoping to start a much bigger pot but we'll see if I can find the time to get it done. Should be ready by the end of summer.........2020! Okay maybe not that long but it'll be just a little while. I'll shoot for July 2009! More garden pots are on their way.

To grout or not to grout.....

Times like this is when I realize I should've been working with smalti!

I love the way this mosaic came out and I don't want to grout it, however, I feel I need too. I'm going to let my Koi swim around for awhile as I weigh my options.

The Sleeping Buddha Mosaic...is DONE!

~MoMe 2009~ This was long overdue! Too many obstacles have approached me when I've wanted to get Buddha finished and............finally it's done! At first I went for a light brown to grout Buddha's body with but after I saw the outcome I hated it. The 'fear of choosing a color/colors to grout' with was also something secretly holding me back from finishong this work. Since I knew I had to change and had to change it quick~ I went with black! When I first drew the outline for this mosaic I emphasized the size of Buddha's hand. I wanted to make Buddha as if he were greater than life and big hands is the way I went.

La Catrina has finally been photographed!

I've finally gotten around to getting a photo of La Catrina. It's been a job trying to get La Catrina completed and photographed and I'm glad she's now up for everyone to see her. I was hoping to have her completed for Day of the Dead last year but due to Hurricane Ike, moving, and a ton of other stuff going on...I just couldn't get her done. Finally she's complete!

My photo was selected for Schmap

My first post for 2009 will be about Schmap! Towards the end of Dec 08, I was contacted by Emma Williams concerning one of my photos on my flickr site. It was of the mosaic statue located at MECA in Houston's Old 6th Ward. Emma liked it and asked if I would approve submitting it for the upcoming publication of Schmap. Well this morning when opening my email, I found out my photo was chosen. Cool huh! Just head on over to check out Schmap.com to view it. Oh yea, I blogged about the selected photo before. Scroll down to where "Mosaics in the City" is located~ the photo chosen is of a blue horse with three small children. Mome! 2009

To the cross I look...

So I was wondering what I should make with my extra supplies for Christmas? The best answer: CROSSES! Here's a pic of a couple of crosses I started and so far I'm happy with them. I came up with several more designs and I'm working on them for a few of my co-workers now. I love this time of year b/c of Christmas. What a great time to be with family and loved ones that I wish the Christmas spirit was alive year round. Here's to wishful thinking! LOL :)
I recently finished one other mosaic novelty that I'm in love with. I already sold this one to my co-worker so I'll have to make me another as a rememberance. I made this with the idea of it being a mosaic keepsake box but I've also been carrying it around as a purse. I guess it could also function that way but I highly recommend against it. It's not heavy but it is made of glass, and glass breaks!!! Not a good idea, huh?!?
I'll be posting pictures of the crosses for my coworkers when I'm finished with them. I hope they all come out just as I planned and ultimately that they like them as much as I do.

The Fall Craft Season has started...

Fall has become my favorite time and it's mostly due to Fall Craft Shows. I love getting out there talking to people and listening to what they like and what they want to buy. To receive compliments on ones work is very gratifying and I'll definitley keep up with the shows for the fall. My sister Juanita and I do the shows together and right now we have 3 more scheduled. Juanita works by the name Magnolia Artisans and is quite the the fabric artist. She makes handbags, bible totes, baby quilts etc... She's extremely talented at her craft and when our work is set up together it looks fabulous. We've been having a lot of fun in our craft adventures together these last couple of years and hopefully we'll have plenty more.
The two photos attached are just a couple of my sold items.

The Sleeping Buddha Mosaic

So this is pretty much what the Buddha will look like. The top portion of the head had really been confusing me and last night I decided this is the route I'd like to take. Hopefully grouting Buddha won't take away too much from the vibrancy of the purples!

I'm getting closer and closer to completing "The Sleeping Buddha"! I addded the border, the stars and now debating on what tesserae to use for the post Buddha has his hand on?!? That's going to be the very last thing I complete and will probably run into something along the way of me completing the sky. Finally completing this project will be exciting b/c I've been starring at it on my living room floor for way too long and I want it grouted and listed on etsy. Saturday should be grouting day and I pray that, that process goes well. We all know how grout can change the beautiful brightness of the tile to something very matte and dull :( Let's hope my grout choice works and that all will be fine in Buddhas dream. MoMe

More City Mosaics...

Here's a few mosaics located on Houston Ave. @ Washington. I would really like to get pictures of all the mosaics located on the underpass, but some may be impossible without me holding up traffic....Guess I'll have to just hold up traffic~ uh?!?~

Mosaics in the city...

What I'll be doing from now on is posting pics I see of local mosaic art I find in the city or out in public view. I love snapping shots of these outdoor displays and I feel I need to share them with everyone.
Yesterday, we (my mom and the kids and me) were drinving through the Old Sixth Ward here in Houston and I spotted this mosaic. I can't believe I haven't seen this ever before, especially since I'm always in or around the area. This mosaic is on the property of MECA along with a statue of Our Lady of Guadalupe, which is made entirely out of cans~ Yes I said cans! (see ablove) When I drove by I thought the statue was a mosaic and then noticed the pretty blue horse to the right of me. Way cool! Anyway, we were driving through sixth ward looking at all of the old houses and remembering where my mom grew up so many years ago here in Houston. The house that my mom grew up in was turned into a bailbonds many years ago and I guess that's appropriate b/c it's 5 minutes away for the courthouse. LOL I'm glad the structure of the house hasn't changed and that it wasn't a vicitm of bulldozing to make way for the citys 15421546187 condo project. ugh how I'm tired of seeing houses being torn down instead of being renovated ~ but enough of that...

Today's Galley Kickoff Event...

A fabulous amount of art went up at work today. These are the few pieces I brought in to display my mosaic talent. I'm still beating myself up about wether or not I should've sealed the lime green Starry Night and I think I shouldn't have. The grout looked pretty light and dull when I finshed the mirror and I felt it needed a little life added to it~ I think I may need to create another 'lime' green Starry Night and debate in my head to (seal or not seal) LOL. Anyhow, I'm extremely proud with my choices for our creative display today and I'll eventually get over it.
Here is one of my favorites from today's showing. Beautiful Blues!!!!

Employee Gallery Event...

This was a great idea that our marketing department came up with. I displayed a handful of my mosaic pieces for the event and they looked really nice once they were all hung. I'll post pics once I get them!

It's the first of the month....

And this is officially the countdown to the craftshows coming up for the fall. In late September I'll send out a list of the shows I'll be participating in for the fall and will definitely post pics of those as well. Last years shows were alot of fun and very successful and I'm looking forward to the same or better outcome for this year. All of this excitement gets me ready for Christmas and Christmas Mosiacs. Christmas Mosaics will be posted on my etsy site in October. Check me out by clicking the link at the bottom of the page or go to Mosaicme.etsy.com MoMe

July is already gone...

And that's quite alright!
Let's see... I have 3 large pieces in the works for this weekend and I'm really looking forward to getting them grouted, sealed and put up on the wall!!! I've neglected these 3 projects for about the last 4 months due to my pregnancy and life in general, but now that life is getting back on track I'm gonna get em' done! ~ Here's a WIP of one of the 2 Buddhas I'll be getting done this weekend. My biggest challenge right now is the hand. I drew it according to the dimensions I took from the photo I looked at to make it proportionate to the rest of the body....but it still seems to be too large?!?
This is something that's going to take up a lot of my time this weekend b/c I'm too SELF CRITICAL!!!!
Attaching the other WIP pics later tonight and will hopefully post completed pics on Monday!

July is already here...

and I have about (hmmmmmmm) 5 projects I'd like to get started but NO TIME do so. With the arrival of my newest son, life has been all about sleeping, feeding, sleeping, feeding and well ya'll get the idea! I'm up against a deadline on one of my projects and once it's finally completed~ I'll post it's pic here. I've been really excited about this mosaic since it's conception and let me say~ It's out of this world! LOL :)

Sometimes finding a good assistant(s) is............impossible!

Because this blog wouldn't be complete without my two fabulously lazy and troublesome assistants, I'm adding this photo of Nilly & Luca in all of their glory. Whether they want to sleep through the entire process of one of my projects or sleep 'ON' one of my projects, they're always nearby to give some support!

Because I've always wanted to blog about my mosaics.....but haven't.

I've been on the web for almost a year now and I'm just now getting around to creating a blog. Hopefully I'll get all of this figured out within the next couple of days and then be able to get some of my mosaic work posted.
